In 2021, we partnered with the Columbus Crew to help design and build the playing field systems for their new training facility: the OhioHealth Performance Center. This was a first-of-its-kind project. No team had ever converted a former stadium into a training complex. And for an added obstacle: the stadium was surrounded by a parking lot, an interstate, and a shopping center. Everyone involved rose to the challenge, and we were honored to learn that Athletic Business has recognized the OhioHealth Performance Center as a 2023 Facilities of Merit Winner.
The facility is an impressive 42,000 square feet and houses locker rooms, weight and training rooms, meeting rooms, and a cafeteria to name a few features. Outside the facility, there are 3 ½ practice fields—two of the USGA natural grass systems are supported with a SubAir aerification system, one field is supported with a hydronic heating system. All the design pays homage to the history and legacy of the club.
Our specific scope of work for this award-winning project included:
- Laser and GPS Surface Grading
- Integrated Drainage System
- Gravel Blanket Layer
- USGA Sand / Peat Blended Rootzone
- Onsite Rootzone Blending
- Automated Irrigation System
- Hydronic Field Heating System
- SubAir Aeration System
- Kentucky Bluegrass Sod
This project was also awarded the 2022 Multi-Field Facility ASBA Award. Baseline Sports Construction, LLC, Hunter Industries, Sportsfield Specialties, and others also helped make this project possible.
