SAVANNAH, GA – On Thursday, March 14, 2019, a groundbreaking ceremony at Benedictine Military School (BC) commenced for a highly anticipated state-of-the-art synthetic turf stadium field slotted for summer completion.  Designed as a multi-sport synthetic turf system by high profile field builder, SCG Fields, LLC, and synthetic turf manufacturer FieldTurf, Football, Soccer, Varsity, and JV Lacrosse athletics will now stay home to play and practice year-round.

Father Albert Field is the first major component to future stadium plans and excitement in the community is evident. “Absolutely electric!” According to Athletic Director, Tom Palmer, at the groundbreaking ceremony, “Last year we played at three different venues that were supposedly home games… We’ve never had the feeling that ‘this is us’ and now it’s in the offing. That is electrically exciting.”

Respectfully named for the late Father Albert Bickerstaff, the community feels confident the field is the ideal way to honor his legacy. Father Bickerstaff served BC as a coach, a teacher, a mentor, and a counselor. Headmaster Father Frank Ziemkiewicz remembers him saying “Albert was one, great, man… He was the heart and soul of BC.”

Notably, a BC community of families, fans and donor support at the groundbreaking ceremony was directed toward the history of field improvements over the last 40 years. First a practice field, then home game field, and now the conversion to synthetic turf. Mario Delaguardia, project donor and BC class of ’79, shares his excitement saying, “When I was here as a Benedictine senior, we wished we had a stadium on campus… and now, 40 years later, it’s a reality.”
