Kent State University

2018 Distinguished Single Field Facility

About This Project

In 2017, SCG Fields performed the removal and replacement of an existing synthetic turf field hockey field at Kent State University. This new facility became known as Murphy-Mellis Field at Kent State University and it is home to the Lady Golden Flashes field hockey and lacrosse teams.

During the initial renovation, SCG was asked to extend the existing playing field length 13.5′ at each end to accommodate a women’s lacrosse layout. Our scope of work included subgrade remediation utilizing cement stabilization process, installation of new sub-drainage piping, new aggregate drainage base, new irrigation system, new porous asphalt substrate, Armacell pad, and knitted nylon synthetic turf surface. We also furnished and installed new fencing and netting systems. In addition to the playing field improvements, SCG installed enlarged bleacher seating utilizing relocated bleachers with new concrete slab foundations poured.

This field was a recipient of an International Hockey Federation (FIH) Class 1 Global Pitch Certification in accordance with FIH Pitch Handbook, dated February 2014. To receive this certification, the testing must be performed by the accredited laboratory. The field had to be measured and tested to meet a multitude of criteria including field or “pitch” dimensions and line markings, pitch slope % and uniformity, pitch smoothness, ball rebound, ball roll distance, ball roll deviation, underfoot friction, impact response, and permeability were all factors in receiving the certification. All testing performed on this field was by Sports Labs LTD and met the required criteria and therefore the field was awarded the Class 1 Global Award.

This field was also recognized as a “2018 Distinguished Single Field Facility” by the American Sports Builders Association (ASBA). Murphy-Mellis Field at Kent State University is regarded as an elite field hockey facility across North America, making it another one of SCG Fields’ award-winning projects.
